Rick Perloff has written more than 35 feature articles that appeared in newspapers and magazines. These include several educationally-related features. published in Belt, an online Rust Belt magazine, on the struggle to gain a college degree and the plight of adjunct faculty. Another story on the personal and political dynamics behind organizing a Cleveland State faculty union appeared in Academe, the national AAUP magazine.
Returning in 2010 to Kent State University, which he described in the aftermath of the tragic shootings in 1970 as a student reporter, Perloff wrote a piece for Scene, a Cleveland-based magazine, that looked at the May 4 shootings from four different vantage points. He also wrote a feature about how the current generation of Kent State activists commemorated the tragedy. Other features include a long article on a storied 60s activist and his storied battles for social justice, in Cleveland Free Times, as well as a long feature on the pain and glories of wheelchair basketball for Scene.
Rick also wrote a number of feature pieces for The Cleveland Jewish News, including a 50-year retrospective on reflections on the trial of Adolf Eichmann; stories about what it is like to be a rabbi and a cantor; the work life of kosher butchers; spontaneous encounters that led young people to commit to Orthodox Judaism; gay Jewish parents raising children; and Modern Love-style stories about Jewish romance.
